This year, many of our students and faculty of the Center for Sexual Health Promotion presented work at the annual meetings of the Society for the Scientific Study of Sexuality (SSSS) in San Diego, CA, and/or at the American Public Health Association (APHA) meeting in Minneapolis, MN. Join us in celebrating these fantastic sexual and reproductive health works and the scholars behind them!
Rebecca Gray, a recent graduate from the MPH program in Behavioral, Social, and Community Health at IU-B SPH, presented her work "Undergraduate students' perceptions and experiences with gynecological examinations" at APHA. This work was mentored and co-authored with Dr. Alyssa Lederer during Rebecca's practicum for her MPH.
Dr. Eric Walsh-Buhi and Dr. Hannah Javidi co-presented a three-study symposium titled “Sexual and other health discussions and potential for interventions in waxing sessions: Esthetician and client perspectives” at the SSSS conference. The work featured in this symposium was in collaboration with IU faculty members Dr. Maggie Walsh-Buhi and Dr. Debby Herbenick.
CSHP doctoral students Oluwapelumi Alesinloye-King and Noor E Afroz presented their respective works at APHA. Noor presented her work titled "Seeking sexual and reproductive health information and care among college aged women: Findings from a campus probability survey" (co-authored by Drs. Lucia Guerra-Reyes and Debby Herbenick) and Oluwapelumi presented a literature review presentation titled "I can't breathe: Exploring the impact of asthma on sexual functioning".
Dr. Hannah Javidi also presented two other works. A poster titled “How much do parents know about their teens’ sex lives?: Alignment of teen self-report and parent proxy-report on teen sexual behaviors, contraception use, and sexting” at SSSS, (IU-affiliated coauthors: Dr. Eric Walsh-Buhi and Xiwei Chen), and another poster - presented at APHA - titled “Sexual assertiveness intentions among adolescent sexual minority males” in collaboration with Bailey Ortyl and Drs. Kate Eddens, Kristen Jozkowski, and Eric Walsh-Buhi.
CSHP doctoral student Mary Balle presented her work, co-authored by Kody Brandenburg and Drs. Debby Herbenick and Danny Valdez titled "Choking on TikTok: Memetic content analysis of sexual choking on TikTok" at SSSS.
Ruhun Wasata, a CSHP PhD candidate presented "Understanding the role of social media information on polycystic ovary syndome (PCOS) care and management among minoritized women" at APHA. Co-authors of this presentation were Drs. Lucia Guerra-Reyes, Debby Herbenick, and Danny Valdez.
Drs. Alyssa Lederer and Alison Greene presented their community-engaged research on HIV and HCV testing intentions and beliefs at APHA, co-authored by IU doctoral students Dechen Sangmo and Mika Baugh, and Dr. Christina Ludema. The presentation was titled "Assessing HIV and HCV testing intention and beliefs among individuals utilizing harm reducation services in rural southeastern Indiana".
