Last week, many of the Center's doctoral students and faculty presented research at the 50th Annual Meeting of the International Academy of Sex Research (IASR) in Berlin, Germany! At this meeting, Dr. Lisa Diamond, IASR's 50th President, welcomed Dr. Debby Herbenick as the organization's 51st President and Indiana University alumnus Dr. Brandon Hill as the President-Elect.
Drs. Debby Herbenick, Eric Walsh-Buhi, Hannah Javidi, and Hank Green, and doctoral students Mary Balle and Kody Brandenburg were in attendance and presented empirical work in various areas at IASR this year.
The pre-conference workshop, "Grad School Didn't Prepare Me for This! Insights from Consulting, Providing Expert Testimony, and Book Publishing", was organized by Dr. Debby Herbenick in her role as IASR president-elect. She was joined on the panel with Drs. Lori Brotto, Cynthia Graham, and Michael Seto.
Mary Balle presented a research poster titled "Choking on TikTok: A Memetic Content Analysis of Sexual Choking on TikTok" using data gathered from popular social media videos. The concurrent manuscript, in collaboration with Dr. Danny Valdez, Dr. Debby Herbenick, and Kody Brandenburg, is currently under review.
Kody Brandenburg presented a research poster titled "Sex Toy Use, Orgasm, and Pleasure among Sexual Minority Men: Findings from a U.S. National Probability Sample" using data from the 2022 National Survey of Sexual Health and Behavior (NSSHB-Wave 8). The respective manuscript, lead-authored by Kody and co-authored by Dr. Debby Herbenick and members of the Biostatistics Consulting Center, is currently in preparation with the goal of a Fall 2024 submission.
Dr. Eric Walsh-Buhi presented a research poster titled “Pubic Hair Removal Among U.S. College Students” using data from the 2023 Campus Sexual Health Survey, a campus-representative sample of undergraduate and graduate students in the Midwest. The concurrent manuscript, a collaboration with Dr. Hannah Javidi, Dr. Maggie Walsh-Buhi, Dr. Debby Herbenick, Becca Fagan Houghton, and Alexandra Hughes-Wegner, is in preparation with a submission goal of Fall 2024.
Dr. Hannah Javidi presented a research poster titled “What Helps College Students Reject Sexual Consent Myths?” using secondary data from a larger research study on sexuality and academic curricular initiatives in the Southern U.S. The concurrent manuscript, a collaboration with Dr. Alyssa Lederer (Indiana University School of Public Health-Bloomington) and Dr. Katie Johnson (Tulane University), is currently under review.
Dr. Hank Green presented a research poster titled "Examining Psychosocial and Social Network Factors Associated with Sexual Minority Depression, Anxiety, and Substance Use" using data from the Person to Person (P2P) Health Interview Study. This project is part of a larger study examining the associations between environments, genetics, and biology and their influences on disease risk, treatment access and outcomes. This work also features CSHP doctoral student Jeff Grant.
