CSHP Faculty member, Dr. Heather Eastman-Mueller, is starting a new position in the School of Public Health. She shares with us about her transition to her new role and what she's most looking forward to.

Can you tell us a little bit about what your previous position entailed?

I was as the Associate Director of Outreach and Education in the Department of Health Promotion for seven years at the IU Student Health Center. My previous job responsibilities included developing, implementing, and evaluating public health programs. I achieved this by coordinating with other academic departments, student organizations, and community groups to advocate and actively educate IUB students on sexual and reproductive health topics. Another aspect of my job was coordinating large campus wide events including Get yourself Tested, Get Yourself Talking, Cupcakes and Condoms, and Vaginas, Vulvas, and Vibrators. This was a dual appointment with the School of Public Health where I taught courses for the Department of Applied Health Science including human sexuality, served as the Director of the Graduate Certificate in Sexual and Reproductive Health, and conducted research associated with college students and factors affecting access to sexual and reproductive healthcare.

What does your new position entail?

My new position is as a Clinical Associate Faculty member in the School of Public Health, Department of Applied Health Sciences. My responsibilities include a larger emphasis on teaching and mentoring students in a variety of capacities. I will be able to focus my efforts on student development, curricular issues, and creating innovative ways to conduct research and provide sexual and reproductive health programming to the campus, the community, and the state.

What are you most looking forward to in your new role?

I am most looking forward to learning from and engaging with faculty members in the department, across campus, and in the state. I am excited to create new partnerships and leverage my experience on the IUB campus to develop more creative ideas to promote and enhance student learning around sexual and reproductive health. I look forward to using different teaching strategies I haven’t been able to in the past and collaborating with other professionals on writing papers, grants, and presentations.
